Sometimes Weight Loss Isn’t The Biggest Victory

First Contact

When Jean-Pierre first contacted Rising Dragon School, he planned to join our training camp in Swedish Lapland to improve his fitness, develop mental resilience and challenge himself in one of the world’s toughest training environments.

Then everything changed.

A scuba diving accident caused severe decompression sickness (the bends), resulting in multiple aneurysms affecting both his brain and spine. The neurological damage left him unable to walk normally, and doctors were unable to predict how much movement or function he would ever recover.

For months, everyday tasks became a challenge.

His focus was no longer on getting fitter or losing weight.

It was about neurological recovery, restoring movement and rebuilding the strength needed to live a normal life again.

When he eventually arrived at Rising Dragon School, this wasn’t a traditional fitness transformation.

It was the beginning of his journey back from a serious spinal injury and a life-changing neurological condition.

Rebuilding From The Ground Up

After the very first training session, I understood why JP had recovered so much in the months following his accident. He possessed something that can’t be measured by any scan or fitness test—an unwillingness to quit.

He refused to feel sorry for himself.

Despite lingering nerve damage and physical limitations, he attacked every session with determination.

Instead of trying to prove anything, we focused on rebuilding movement, restoring strength, reducing body fat and improving his overall health.

Some exercises had to be modified.

Others had to be completely avoided.

But every week he became stronger.

The Programme

Because of JP’s recent neurological injury, this wasn’t a standard weight loss programme.

Every session had to balance rebuilding strength while respecting the limitations created by his nerve damage.

His programme included:

  • Progressive strength training

  • Daily mobility and movement restoration

  • Walking and endurance development

  • Boxing and martial arts drills adapted to his ability

  • Recovery sessions

  • Ketogenic nutrition

  • High protein meals

  • Daily accountability

  • Cold exposure and sauna recovery

  • Continuous coaching and education

Rather than chasing calories burned, our focus was rebuilding movement, restoring confidence and allowing his body to recover while steadily becoming stronger.

The Results

After four weeks JP had:

• Lost 6.8kg

• Improved posture and mobility

• Completed every week of the programme despite nerve damage

• Ran over 10 kilometres—something he said he’d never previously been capable of

• Described himself as “probably the fittest he’d ever been."

A Gruelling Four Weeks

“It's been a tough experience”

“I've dropped fat, built muscle and the other day ran 10km which is something I've never been able to do”

“Despite everything I’ve gone through, I’m probably the fittest I’ve ever been.”

“The mornings were the hardest… waking up sore and forcing myself out of bed to train again.”

Coach's Notes

JP’s story reminds me why I created this environment in the first place.

Not everyone arrives needing to lose weight.

Some arrive needing to rebuild themselves.

Following a near-fatal diving accident, JP wasn’t simply carrying extra body fat. He was dealing with the physical and psychological effects of an injury that had left doctors uncertain how much function he would regain.

Our priority wasn’t pushing him to exhaustion.

It was rebuilding his movement, strengthening weak areas, restoring confidence and proving to him that his body was capable of far more than he believed.

Every exercise was chosen for a reason. Some movements were modified. Others were avoided completely.

Progress wasn’t measured by how hard he could train, but by what he could safely do today that he couldn’t do yesterday.

As his confidence grew, so did his physical capacity.

Scott Bird with weight loss client

Perhaps the greatest result wasn’t the 6.8kg he lost.

It was hearing him say:

“Despite everything I’ve gone through, I’m probably the fittest I’ve ever been.”

That is exactly why we do what we do.

Years later, after another difficult chapter involving illness, surgery and recurring back injuries, JP contacted me again—not because he wanted another holiday, but because he wanted to rebuild his health once more.

That tells me more about our programme than any testimonial ever could.

JP later told me the hardest part wasn’t the training itself—it was waking up each morning sore and forcing himself back into the gym. That willingness to keep showing up is what allowed the transformation to happen.

2026

After another difficult period involving COVID, back surgery and recurring spinal injuries, JP has chosen to return to Rising Dragon School—this time in the Philippines—to rebuild his health once again.

7 Years Later...

Life isn’t linear.

Years after his original transformation, JP faced new health challenges including illness, surgery and recurring back injuries.

Today, he’s preparing to return to Rising Dragon School in the Philippines.

His goal isn’t simply to lose weight.

As he recently told me:

“I need the RDS Method in my life”
